Emil Zátopek

The Legend and Elite of Long-Distance Running

Emil Zátopek is the only runner in the world to win the 5 000m, the 10 000m and the marathon at the same Olympic Games (Helsinki 1952). He did it in just eight days and it was his first time running a marathon. During his career he broke 18 world records and over 50 Czechoslovak records. He even won the best athlete poll three times.

Ostrava City

Zatopek’s First World Record

It was in Ostrava where Emil Zátopek first set 10 000m world record and at the same year (1949) also surpassed it. That was the start of his incredible career. In the spirit of his tradition, other runners in Ostrava have also managed to break a few world records. Kenenisa Bekele broke the world record for 10 000m in 2004 and Haile Gebrselassie broke the world records for 20 000m and the one hour run in 2007.
